For you and the manager
The case for the Rocket
It's the only one of the three that hands us COVER and SPREAD for free. The engine is permanently the cover man, and the two wings are permanently the width — so the shape does half the coaching for us. It's the shape most commonly recommended for this format at this age, precisely because it gives support both in defence and in attack.
The case for the Square
If the boys are still lost after a few weeks, the Square is the honest fallback. They understand "four corners" instantly, and it stops the beehive better than anything. The cost is the hole through the middle, which better teams will walk straight through.
What I'd actually agree with him
- Start every match in the Rocket.
- Switch to the Square if we're bunching badly and can't fix it with shouting.
- Use the Y only if we're being overrun and need to calm a game down.
- Rotate everyone through all four outfield spots across the season. Nobody is "the defender" at nine.
One thing to agree up front. Whichever shape you pick, don't let it become a car park. The whole point of the animation above is that the shape squashes when they have it and stretches when we have it. A boy standing on his cone all game has misunderstood the instruction.
